Journeys for All: An Expedia Group Study on Inclusion in Travel

Not all people have equal access to the benefits of travel, due to a variety of factors including race, ethnicity, gender and sexual identity, disability, economic status and geographic location. Approx. 42% of underserved travelers feel limited by their identities when planning travel. The travel industry has an opportunity and an imperative to change this by making travel more inclusive, all the while building a stronger, more diverse traveler base.

Data on the type of barriers people face when planning travel is limited, siloed and doesn’t paint a clear picture of what needs to be done to solve the problems. This research is a first-of-its-kind effort to illuminate the barriers across identities so the industry can take action to remove these obstacles. Expedia Group is committed to adopting four important principles and urges the industry to do the same:

Use data and learnings from underserved travelers when designing your strategies.
Design products and experiences that genuinely reflect the lived experiences.
Ensure that the diversity of your team mirrors that of your customers.
Make sure underserved travelers are represented in advertising and promotion. 70% of underserved travelers say they are more likely to plan a trip if they see themselves represented in ads.

Creating more inclusive travel experiences will help companies tap into an expanding market. 71% of underserved travelers state a preference for brands that support diversity and inclusion; 73% are more likely to book again with those brands.

Made to Travel

Expedia’s Made to Travel™ Fund awards grants to impact-focused nonprofits that share our goal of removing barriers to travel for underserved and underrepresented travelers. To date, the Fund has supported more than 15 like-minded organizations and enabled travel for thousands across the globe.
